Ofsted Inspection 2016

LJS was visited by a team of inspectors on the 22nd & 23rd November, under the leadership of Malcolm Kirtley HMI. The overall feedback was extremely positive with the school being rated “Good” with several outstanding elements for Teaching & Learning, Personal Development, Well-being, Behaviour and Leadership.

Some of the key findings of the report are:-

The quality of teaching is good and improving and is enabling the majority of pupils to make better rates of progress.

“Pupils are making good progress in key subjects.”

“Clear leadership has contributed to improving rates of progress.”

“Governors show a passionate commitment to the school.”

“The behaviour of pupils is good. Pupils’ behaviour in classrooms and around the site is calm and orderly.”

“The school actively promotes an ethos of cooperation and mutual respect. Pupils display a pride in the school and in their appearance.”

“The school has the highest competitive sports participation programme in the local authority and has developed a significant hub for music, with over 140 pupils accessing music tuition.”

“Pupils are well prepared for the next stages of their education.”

However, although “progress is improving”, Outcomes were deemed to be “not yet good” based on progress between 2013 and 2015. As a result of this aspect, the school received an overall judgement of Requires Improvement based on Outcomes. The Governors, on behalf of the School, challenged this decision Headteacher Tony Gavin said: “Of course we are always striving to be better and our decision to complain was not taken lightly, to be rated ‘Good’ with outstanding features in three out of four categories and still be rated RI overall is a harsh outcome. “

Update : Laurence Jackson School were informed by the Investigating Officer on 20 January that the final judgement of requires improvement for overall effectiveness was to be upheld. In response to this, Headteacher Tony Gavin said, “ Despite this final judgement, teachers and students at LJS will continue to work very hard to improve outcomes and ensure progress is made in all areas.”
