Newcastle Salters Chemistry Trip

On 13 June 2017, Jessica M, William S, Meredith R and Cara S attended a Salters Chemistry competition held at Newcastle University.

Accompanied by Mr Hannaway and Miss Sadler their day started with an introduction to all the schools taking part in the festival by esteemed lecturer Peter Hoare.

The students then took part in the Salters Challenge, which involved using Chromatography and various chemical reactions to solve a murder mystery.

This was a difficult challenge due to time constraints and the number of reactions that had to take place. After lunch the students were able to take part in a lecture named ‘Chemistry in my shopping basket’. This involved watching exciting demonstrations, their favourite of which were experiments involving liquid nitrogen, dry ice and elephants toothpaste.

During the day the students also took part in the University challenge where they used their practical skills to create different colours by mixing Acids and Alkalis' and using Universal indicator. The students involved thoroughly enjoyed their day, were a credit to LJS and enjoyed the experience of working in a different environment whilst learning new and helpful practical skills.
