Exam Results Press Release

LJS exam results stand firm against changes in the exam system nationally

Successful outcomes at LJS for Class of 2017

Despite yet more significant changes to the exams and qualifications framework nationally, Year 11 students at Laurence Jackson School, Guisborough have matched the high levels of achievement from previous years.

Cohort 2017 are the first year group to be judged using the new 9-1 grading system for GCSE English and Maths. This system describes grade 4 is as a ‘standard pass’ and grade 5 a ‘strong pass’ (high C and low B on the old grading system). The DfE reminds parents that the content of the new GCSEs is more challenging and results for from the reformed GCSEs cannot be compared with the old GCSE’s as they are entirely new courses with a new grading system.

Exact figures are yet to be confirmed but the vast majority of candidates achieved good results in English and Maths.

In addition, there were particularly impressive outcomes in French, Geography, Music, PE/Sport, Art and Child Development with a significant improvement in all aspects of Science; over 98% of candidates achieving A-Cs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

There were many outstanding individual performances with several students attaining 12 or more A/A*s or grade 9/8 in English and Maths, a tribute to their dedication.

Retiring Headteacher Tony Gavin and Headteacher designate Belinda Wheatman commended the relentless commitment of LJS students and staff; “There have been so many changes to the exam system over the past four years that it has been increasingly difficult to predict outcomes.  However, what we do know is that our students have risen to the occasion and have tried their best to achieve their targets and we cannot ask for more than that.

It should also be remembered that exam results, important as they are, only represent part of the bigger educational picture.  As well as performing so well academically, we would like to take this opportunity to commend cohort 2017 for participating wholeheartedly in so many other areas of school and community life.  They proved to be outstanding role models and are excellent ambassadors for the school, their families and the wider local community.  They deserve their success and everyone at LJS wishes them all the very best for the future. We would also like to sincerely thank the staff – teaching and support, for their exceptional commitment to cohort 2017 and to fulfilling our motto of ‘ Improving Life Chances’.
